Eventful Weekend

To say this last weekend was eventful is putting it a little mildly..... It started out great, Friday we went out to dinner and took Austin to see the new Terminator movie (which was awesome). However, during the middle of the movie, Trav's stomach started hurting pretty badly. He's had some stomach issues for awhile now (our Doc thinks it's an ulcer), so we weren't too concerned at the time. It did, although, get worse and worse. I'll spare you the details, but I will mention a lot of throwing up was involved! It continued all day Saturday. After I got back from a wedding job Sat evening, he was in so much pain, we decided he needed to go to the ER. Luckily, Austin was already at a friend's for a birthday sleepover, so that was nice. We got to Sacred Heart at about 6:00pm and didn't have to wait too long to be seen. After a lot of tests and "does this hurt when I press here?" the doctor was thinking it was indeed the ulcer and it had just gotten really bad. But then Trav happened to mention that the pain was starting to move from his upper stomach, under his sternum, to his lower right abdomen. The doctor's eyes got a little big and said "Oh really??" He then said we should do one more test, a CT Scan, just in case. Let's just say that was a very fine idea. Come to find out, Trav had Appendicitis. It hadn't ruptured yet, but they didn't want to take any chances and transferred him up to the OR, where the surgeon agreed with the ER doc and immediately started getting ready to operate. Travis went into surgery about 2:30am on Sunday morning (what a wonderful Father's Day present!). The surgery itself is a pretty simple one as far as surgeries go; it only took about 45 minutes. Since his appendix hadn't ruptured yet, they were able to do only three small incisions and use microscopes to help remove it. He came out of the anesthesia pretty well and there were no complications from the surgery. The rest of Sunday he was trying to get rest and the nurses were, of course, constantly checking his vitals, etc. He was very determined to start recuperating quickly and be released, so he was doing absolutely everything they told him! He ended up getting released Monday morning at about 9:00am. I brought him straight home and got him all set up with his meds and water bottle. He's slept off and on all day, but is slowly starting to feel stronger and more "with it." He's not supposed to eat any solids yet, not lift anything over 5 lbs and just generally take it slow. I guess most people feel much better after about 3 days and most go back to work after a week. What sucks for us, is we're scheduled to leave for our trip to the coast this Thurs morning! As of right now, I think we'll still go, unless he starts feeling horrible suddenly. I'll just do all the packing, loading, driving, etc. What's new right? (just kidding) The funny thing is, the doctor thinks he still has the ulcer, that this was completely separate from that. It's a good thing we decided to go to the ER! Who knows what could have happened if we had waited any longer!
I wanted to send special thank yous to those that helped so much during this crazy weekend- Margo and Joe- as always, thanks for helping with Austin, visiting and just plain being there; The Kaisers- thank you for having Austin so long and doing all the driving; The Rigbys- thanks for the visit (& the contraband shake!) and many offers of help; Mom and Dad Greene- thanks for the visit and sweet gift and everyone else who called, texted, IMd and sent well wishes!!

  1. Wowzers, that doesn't sound much fun! Glad to hear that everything went well. I had my gallbladder removed laproscopically, and Travis will be feeling better in a few days.
Hope you are all able to enjoy your trip to the coast!
